The class most people mean when they say they did a cooking class in Ubud. It runs out of Puspa's family compound in Laplapan: the morning group starts at the Ubud market while the sellers are still unpacking, walks through the family's rice fields, then cooks around seven Balinese dishes in an open kitchen under the same roof the family eats in. It has held the top of TripAdvisor's Ubud classes list for years without turning into a production line, and it is still the best answer to "one class, done properly, at a village price".

Real family compound, not a demo kitchen Dawn market run included in the morning class Around seven dishes and a full lunch for 350k The afternoon session skips the market tour Groups run up to about fifteen people Books out days ahead in high season

Not for anyone who wants the market tour in the afternoon, or a small group; up to about fifteen, books out in high season

The most transparent school on this list: every programme and price is published, from the 5h45m morning class with the market visit to the evening dinner class and the advanced session for people who already know their base gede from their sambal matah. You harvest in the organic garden before you cook, the shuttle from central Ubud is included, and vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian and meat menus are built in rather than improvised.

Full published price list, every session type Farm harvest plus market, recipe book included Vegan and vegetarian menus are standard, not a favour Forty to forty five minutes each way from Ubud Costs noticeably more than the village classes Private and advanced sessions climb near 1m IDR

Not for anyone who wants a short transfer or has a 350,000 budget; 40 to 45 minutes each way, from 495,000

Running since 1992 in the gardens of Honeymoon Guesthouse, this is the culinary-school end of the scale rather than the village-kitchen end. Janet DeNeefe, who founded the Ubud Food Festival, built a themed week: market tour and cook on Tuesday and Thursday, ceremonial dishes on Wednesday, Indonesian classics on Friday, a fully plant-based Saturday, and smoked duck at twilight on Sunday. You learn the culture behind the plate, not just the recipe.

Themed days, so repeat visits are not repeats Dedicated plant-based class every Saturday Walkable central location, no transfer needed Only Tuesday and Thursday include the market Classroom feel rather than a family compound Costs more than the village schools

Not for anyone who wants a market tour on other days; the market is a Tuesday and Thursday thing

Set on an 8,000 square metre organic farm in Taro, north of Ubud, this one leans hardest into the field-to-plate story: traditional market first, then harvesting your own ingredients, then a long multi-course Balinese feast with a recipe book to take home. Round-trip transport from central Ubud is included, which makes the higher headline price closer to the village classes than it looks.

Genuine organic farm harvest, not a token garden Round-trip shuttle from central Ubud included Longest session on the list, up to six hours Taro is a real drive from town Group tour rates quoted higher, 480-550k Exact price varies by booking channel

Not for anyone who needs a fixed price; 450,000 to 550,000 depending on channel, and Taro is far out

A family-run class that pays attention to the things others treat as optional: a proper market tour, a printed recipe guide, a full vegetarian and vegan menu, and step-free access for wheelchair users, which is close to unheard of among Ubud compounds. The evening session runs to eight at night, so it works as dinner rather than a second lunch.

Vegan and vegetarian menus as full alternatives Wheelchair accessible, rare for this category Evening session doubles as dinner Pricier than the 350k village tier Small operation, limited dates Rating and review counts not verified

Not for anyone who needs a flexible date; a small operation with limited dates, from 475,000

The class for people who like the pharmacy side of Balinese food. Alongside the market visit and the rice-paddy walk you get a proper session on herbs and jamu, the local herbal medicine, before you cook. It sits between the 350k village tier and the farm schools on price, and it is the one guests tend to remember for what they learned rather than what they ate.

Herbs and jamu block you will not get elsewhere Market and rice-paddy walk included Fair price for the depth of the programme Less known, fewer independent reviews Exact dish count not published Rating not verified

Nine dishes, and a genuine nine-dish vegetarian version rather than a swap of one ingredient, which is why vegetarians keep landing here. The walk through the terraces comes with an explanation of subak, the thousand-year-old irrigation system that gives the class its name, so you leave understanding why the rice on your plate is grown the way it is. Shuttle included, both sessions the same price.

One of the oldest classes in town, formerly Payuk Bali, still run by Ketut and his family. The format is the classic one done well: pickup, market tour, nine dishes cooked with the family talking you through each spice paste, then everyone eats together. Both sessions cost the same, and the afternoon one finishes late enough to count as dinner.

Long-running family class, consistent format Free pickup and market tour included Nine dishes for 350k, either session Name change from Payuk Bali still confuses bookings Kitchen is busy when groups are full Rating not verified

The most cultural of the budget tier. Besides the market and the rice fields you make canang sari, the daily offering, and press coconut oil the way the household does it, so the cooking sits inside the ritual it belongs to. A good pick for a first trip to Bali when you want context as much as recipes.

The easiest one to book with children. Five hours, vegetarian and non-vegetarian recipes side by side, free shuttle, and a lesson format that adapts for kids instead of parking them at a table. The late afternoon session ends after eight, which suits families who would rather cook their dinner than rush back for it.

Works for families, children get their own lesson Vegetarian and meat menus run in parallel Five hours and shuttle at the 350k price Evening session ends after 20:30 Less atmospheric than the village compounds Rating not verified

Not for anyone who wants an early night; the evening class finishes after 20:30

Frequently asked

How much does a cooking class in Ubud cost?

The honest range is 350,000 to 530,000 IDR per person for a group class. Village family compounds like Paon Bali, Subak, Ketut's, Periuk and Canting sit at 350,000, Ubad Ubud at 375,000, Casa Luna at 400,000 to 500,000, Lobong at 475,000, the Taro farm school at 450,000 to 480,000 and Pemulan at 495,000 to 530,000. Evening, advanced and private formats run from 750,000 to about 975,000 at Pemulan. Anything cheaper than 350,000 usually means no market tour or no transport.

Which Ubud cooking classes include the morning market tour?

Paon Bali, Subak, Ketut's, Periuk, Ubad Ubud, Lobong, the Bali Farm Cooking School in Taro and Pemulan's morning session all include a traditional market visit. Casa Luna includes it only on Tuesday and Thursday. Afternoon and evening sessions almost never include it, because the market is finished by then, so book the morning if the market is the part you want.

Are there vegetarian and vegan cooking classes in Ubud?

Yes, and it is worth choosing deliberately. Subak teaches a full nine-dish vegetarian menu, Pemulan runs vegan, vegetarian and pescatarian menus as standard, Lobong has full vegan and vegetarian alternatives, Casa Luna dedicates its Saturday class to plant-based cooking, and Canting runs vegetarian and meat recipes in parallel. Elsewhere you can usually ask for a swap, which is not the same as a designed menu.

How long does a Balinese cooking class take?

Plan on half a day. Village classes run four to five hours, Subak 08:00 to 13:00 or 14:00 to 18:30, Ketut's 08:30 to 13:00 or 15:00 to 19:30, Canting five hours, Pemulan's morning session five hours forty five minutes with the market, and the Taro farm school four to six hours. Casa Luna is the shortest at three and a half to four hours.

Is transport from central Ubud included?

Usually yes. Paon Bali, Ketut's, Subak, Canting, Pemulan and the Bali Farm Cooking School all include pickup or a shuttle, which matters because several of them sit twenty to forty minutes out of town. Casa Luna is the exception you can simply walk to, since it is on Jl. Raya Ubud in the centre.

Is this cooking class ranking sponsored?

No. Nobody can buy a place on this list, and we take no commission on the bookings. Prices come from the schools' own pages and 2026 guides, and where a school does not publish a figure we write "n/a" instead of inventing one.
