Frequently asked

How much does scuba certification cost in Houston?

By published prices, Open Water costs $449 at Gulf Coast Scuba (plus required personal gear, a $65 daily pool fee and lake entry), from $450 for SSI at Sport Divers, $479 at Sugar Land Dive Center (eLearning, rental gear and dive insurance included), from $499.95 for PADI at OTA and $599 all-inclusive at Maximum Scuba.

Where do Houston divers do their open water dives?

In Texas lakes. Gulf Coast Scuba trains at local lakes after pool sessions, Maximum Scuba's site has waivers for lakes such as Twin Lakes and Lake Longhorn, and OTA's blog makes the case that Texas lakes prepare you for the ocean. Sea diving means a trip, such as the group trips Sport Divers and OTA organise.

Can I dive in the Gulf of Mexico from Houston?

Not from the city itself: Houston has no shore diving. Offshore Gulf sites such as the Flower Garden Banks are reached on long boat trips from the coast, so ask the shops about scheduled trips rather than expecting a day dive from town.

Can I try scuba before signing up for a course?

OTA lists a PADI Discover Scuba Dive in its indoor heated pool at $75 on sale (regular $174.95). Sugar Land Dive Center runs Discover Scuba Diving in its own heated pool and Sport Divers a Try Scuba Diving session; ask both for current prices.

Is this list sponsored?

No. The ranking is editorial and unpaid: dive shops rated 4.4 or higher with at least 40 Google reviews, one branch per brand, ordered by a review-weighted score. No shop paid or was asked to pay for a place.
