What goes wrong at Bali surf schools and camps?
The nine traps, and the school each one comes from
Everything here is a fact from our ranking of Bali's surf camps, our Uluwatu surf ranking or the schools' own price pages, read 17-18 October 2026. None of it is an accusation: these are published conditions that catch people who do not read them.
| What goes wrong | Where we found it | The question that prevents it |
|---|---|---|
| No lesson price published; "ask directly" or "booked via OTA platforms" | Padang Padang Surf Camp, Brown Sugar, Elsewhere, CARI, Seaside Tribe, Kavo, Kima, Mojosurf, LP Surf, Balumba's packages | "What is the price per person for one lesson, in rupiah?" |
| Priced in euros per night, so the lesson cost is invisible | Rapture from about 95 euro a night with half board; Kima weeks 499-659 euro; Soleia from about 63 euro a day | "How many coached sessions are inside the nightly rate, and what does an extra one cost?" |
| Group rates are per person, so a pair pays double | Hawaii Surf 400k per person; Bali Bisa 400k each; Surf Lesson Bali 400k, three or more | "Is that per person or per group, and what is the semi-private for two?" |
| Intermediate programmes assume you can stand up | Kima Uluwatu's intermediate programme; Chandra's 400k intermediate private against 300k beginner | "I can catch whitewater but not a green wave: which session am I?" |
| One lesson a day means slow progression | Seaside Tribe, one lesson a day; Rapture and Kima run guiding twice daily | "How many water sessions a day, and is the second one coached or guided?" |
| The beach is fixed, the wind is not | Kuta beach schools on one stretch of sand; Mondo drives to whichever break is working; Bali Bisa teaches at Dreamland, which gets crowded | "Where do we surf when Canggu goes onshore in the wet season?" |
| Deposits and no-refund windows | Chandra's asks 50 percent; Mondo and Surf & Yoga book through Bookinglayer | "What happens to my session if the swell makes the lesson unsafe?" |
| Meeting point spread across breaks | Balumba is spread across breaks; Mojosurf operates across Bali | "Which beach, and will you confirm the night before?" |
| Reviews written by the school | Soleia's self-published rankings; the search results for "best surf camp bali" are camps and affiliate sites | "Show me a Google review count with a date, not a badge" |
Source: our rankings on this site (data/venues.csv) and the schools' own price pages read headless on 17-18 October 2026; the four Bukit schools with full price lists are Hawaii Surf, Surf Lesson Bali, Balumba and Bali Bisa.
Trap one: the price you were quoted is not the price you pay
The Bukit schools that publish a full list (Hawaii Surf, Surf Lesson Bali, Balumba, Bali Bisa) all say 400,000 for a group lesson, and all four mean per person. Up2U in Legian says 200,000 for a two-hour group and 190,000 each from three people. If you are two friends who assume the group price is split, the bill is double what you planned, and the cheaper correct answer, the semi-private at 450,000-500,000 each on the Bukit or 250,000 each in Kuta, is the one nobody at the desk offers unprompted. We laid the whole ladder out on private or group surf lesson. The camps have the opposite problem: Rapture publishes about 95 euro a night with half board and Kima 499-659 euro a week, and neither number tells you what a lesson costs, which is fine if you wanted a camp and expensive if you wanted two lessons and a villa elsewhere.
Trap two: you are not the level the menu was written for
Every published menu is a beginner menu, because that is the product that sells itself: a briefing, a pop-up drill, a push into whitewater. The moment you can stand on your own the coaching changes, and so does the price. Chandra's in Kuta prices it explicitly, 300,000 for a two-hour beginner private and 400,000 for an intermediate one, because the coach paddles out the back with you. Kima's Uluwatu intermediate programme assumes you can already stand up; book it a week too early and you spend five days being guided to waves you cannot catch. Surf Lesson Bali's 500,000 semi-private is its intermediate format, for surfers who catch whitewater and want green waves. Say your level in one sentence when you book: "I can stand in whitewater, I cannot catch a green wave" is enough for any school to put you in the right session.
Trap three: the season decides more than the school
Bali's west coast, which is where Kuta, Canggu, Seminyak and the beginner beaches are, is offshore in the dry season (May to October) and goes onshore and messy after late morning from November to March; the rainy season page explains why. A camp handles it by driving to the east coast or the Bukit before dawn; Mondo's 475,000 session includes a car to whichever break is working. A beach school fixed to one stretch of Kuta sand cannot, and a 9am lesson in January on the west coast is often a lesson in whitewater that would have been a wave at 6am. Bali Bisa teaches at Dreamland on the Bukit, which holds a gentle wave in both seasons but gets crowded for exactly that reason. If your trip is November to March, book a school that names a second beach.
Trap four: the schedule is slower than the brochure
"Surf camp" covers everything from Seaside Tribe's one lesson a day in Kedungu to Rapture and Kima's guiding twice daily, seven days a week. One session a day is a holiday with surfing in it; two is a surf trip. The difference across a week is seven water hours, which at the Bukit's published rates is 2.8 million of lessons you did or did not get. CARI runs an intense schedule and says so, which suits the second kind of guest and ruins the first. Ask for the number of coached sessions a day and whether the second is a coached lesson or a guided session, because at most camps the morning is one and the afternoon is the other.
Trap five: nobody independent has reviewed the camp
This is the trap behind all the others. People add "reddit" to this search because the first page is the camps' own sites, Soleia's self-published rankings, and affiliate booking platforms that state in their own terms that they weight toward camps they earn from. We take no bookings and no commissions, which is why we can say that six of the ten camps on our island ranking publish no price at all and that two of the Uluwatu schools book only through OTA platforms. A Google review count with recent dates (Soleia has 551 at 4.9, to its credit) is a better signal than any badge on a homepage, and a published price in rupiah is the best signal of all, because a school that prints its prices is a school that expects to be compared.
Not for
This page is not for the surfer who already reads a line-up: the traps above are beginner and improver traps, and your question is reef guiding, which LP Surf is less geared to and Kima and Rapture sell as daily guiding. It is not a list of bad schools; every school named here is on our rankings because it is worth booking, with its conditions read. And it is not a substitute for one message: the price per person for your group size and level, what the ticket includes, where you surf when the wind turns and what happens if the swell cancels the session. Any school that answers those four in writing has already removed most of what goes wrong.
