Private or group surf lesson in Bali: which should you book?
Group, semi-private and private, school by school
Every school here is on our Uluwatu surf ranking or our ranking of Bali's surf camps, plus the Kuta beach schools from the Canggu lesson price page. Prices are each school's own published rate for one lesson; "n/a" means the school sells packages only and we did not invent a per-lesson figure.

Across the four Bukit schools that publish all three formats the ratio is the same: group 400,000, semi-private 450,000-500,000 each, private 600,000-650,000, so a private costs 1.5 to 1.6 times a group place and a semi-private about 1.2 times. Kuta runs the same ladder at half the money. Canggu's only published lesson-only price, Mondo, is a different product (a coached day session with a car to the working break), which is why its private is 950,000.

What the group lesson actually wins
Price, and the right product for day one. A first surf lesson is a beach briefing, a pop-up drill on the sand and a coach standing waist-deep pushing you into whitewater; one instructor can do that for three to five people without anyone losing out, which is why every Bukit school prices the group at a flat 400,000 per person for two hours and why Kuta's beach schools can sell the same hour for 150,000-200,000. Bali Bisa caps its groups at five and runs them at 7-9am and 4-6pm, the two calm windows; Surf Lesson Bali and Hawaii Surf take three or more. You also get the thing nobody prices: other beginners falling off next to you, which is most of the fun of the first day.
The trade-off is attention once you can stand. In a group of five the coach pushes you into one wave in every five, and the moment you need someone to tell you where to sit and which wave to let go, the group format stops working. Groups also run on the school's schedule, not yours: morning and late afternoon, on the beach the school picks.
What the private lesson actually wins
The second week. Once you can catch whitewater on your own, the next skill is reading a green wave, and that is one-to-one work: the coach paddles out with you, picks the wave, and tells you why. Every school on the list prices that at 600,000-650,000 on the Bukit and 200,000-325,000 in Kuta, and Chandra's puts a number on the difference, 300,000 for a two-hour beginner private against 400,000 for an intermediate one, because the coach goes out the back with you. Mondo's 950,000 private in Canggu includes the car to whichever break is working that morning, which on a wet-season day on the west coast is the whole value.
The trade-off is money against time in the water. A private is 1.5 to 1.6 times a group place for the same two hours, and for a complete beginner most of that premium buys a coach watching you practise a pop-up you could practise in a group. Multi-lesson privates bring the price down a little (Hawaii Surf 1.95 million for three, 650,000 each; Up2U's five-lesson private card 1.585 million, 317,000 each), but the saving is small; the real value of a card is that the same coach sees your progression.
The semi-private is the answer for most pairs
Two people, one coach, 450,000-500,000 each on the Bukit (Balumba 900,000 for two, Hawaii Surf and Bali Bisa 500,000 each, Surf Lesson Bali 500,000 each for its intermediate format), 250,000 each in Kuta at Up2U. You get half a coach for 1.2 times the group price, which is the best coaching-per-rupiah on the island, and it solves the problem couples and friends actually have, which is that one of you stands up on day one and the other does not. Hawaii Surf sells it in packs too (2.8 million and 4.5 million for two people). Ask for it by name: most price pages list it, few desks offer it unprompted.
The honest tie-breakers
Never surfed, one or two sessions in the trip: group, in Kuta if you are near it (150,000-200,000) or on the Bukit at 400,000 if that is where you sleep. Never surfed, travelling as a pair: semi-private. Can stand in whitewater and want a green wave: private, and say so when you book, because the intermediate session is priced and staffed differently. A week with surfing as the point: a camp, where the lessons are bundled into the bed from about 730,000 a night at Kima Uluwatu or 1.24 million at Mondo, and compare that with a guesthouse plus 400,000-650,000 of lessons a day on the Canggu price page. Wet season (November to March): book a school or camp that drives to the east coast rather than a beach school fixed to one stretch of sand; when the rainy season hits explains why the west coast goes onshore after late morning.
Not for
Do not book a private for your very first lesson unless you are nervous in the water or want a fixed time of day; the skill you are learning that day is a pop-up, and a group teaches it for 40 percent less. Do not book a group if you already surf: the published group menus are beginner menus, and the intermediate upgrade (Chandra's 400,000, Surf Lesson Bali's 500,000 semi-private) is the exception. Do not compare a Mondo day session with a Kuta hour as if they were the same product: one includes a car, a coach and a working break, the other includes the beach you are standing on. And do not pay for five lessons up front at a school you have not surfed with once; the cards save 5-10 percent and lock you to a coach you have not met.
