Bali Q&A

How do you avoid Bali belly?

Short answerThree habits prevent most cases: drink only bottled or refill-gallon water (including for brushing, if you want zero risk), eat where turnover is high - busy warungs beat empty tourist restaurants, and wash or sanitise hands before eating. If it gets you anyway, the fix is hydration plus electrolytes (Oralit sachets from any minimart), bland food and rest - most cases clear within 48 hours.

Where we send people to eat, with turnover and prices

The high-turnover rule is easier to follow with names. From our own rankings, re-checked October 2026:

  • Sanur: Sindhu Night Market (portions 15-30k, dinner 25-50k) and Warung Mak Beng (set meal 55-100k) are the two busiest and cheapest tables in our Sanur list.
  • Ubud: Seeds of Life (mains 50-90k), Zest (smoothie bowls 75-90k), Watercress (breakfast 85-125k) and Alchemy (from 85k++) are the healthy cafes we rank; raw and cold-pressed menus are exactly where the washing-water question matters, so ask how they wash.
  • Seminyak: Warung Bernadette (dishes 30-80k) is the one warung on our restaurant list; the rest run 90-290k++ for a main.
  • Canggu: we rank five healthy cafes (LowCal, Superfood, Motion, Oasis Salad Bar, Secret Spot) and none publishes prices online, so n/a.

Price is not a safety signal in either direction here: the 25k night-market plate and the 290k Seminyak main both depend on turnover and handling, not on the bill.

Prevention that is actually about food, not fear

Bali belly is traveller's diarrhoea: unfamiliar bacteria, usually from water or food handling. The water rules are in our tap water answer. On food, the reliable heuristic is turnover and heat: a packed warung cycling through fresh nasi campur at lunch is safer than a quiet buffet that has stood since morning. Peeled fruit over pre-cut, cooked over raw at street level, and go easy on sambal the first days - chilli irritation gets misdiagnosed as illness constantly.

The 48-hour fix

Hydration is the whole game: water plus Oralit rehydration sachets (a few thousand rupiah at any Indomaret or Circle K), coconut water or Pocari Sweat between (Unicare Clinic). Eat plain - rice, toast, banana, clear soup. Local charcoal tablets (Norit) are a beloved folk remedy and harmless, but medical guidance does not actually endorse charcoal for traveller's diarrhoea, so do not rely on it. Loperamide (Imodium) is for bus rides and flights, not a cure - it parks the problem. Skip alcohol, coffee and dairy until solid.

When it is not just Bali belly

See a doctor if you have a high fever, blood in stool, signs of real dehydration, or no improvement after 72 hours. Clinics in Canggu, Seminyak and Ubud handle this daily; many do home visits with IV rehydration for 700,000-1,500,000 IDR (worth every rupiah on day two of misery). This page is field experience plus published clinic guidance, not medical advice - severe symptoms mean a professional, full stop.
