Bali Q&A

How many days do you need in Bali?

Short answerFor a first trip, seven to ten days is the honest sweet spot - enough for a beach base plus a few days in Ubud without living in the car. Five days is doable if you pick one region and barely move. Under five and Bali's traffic eats your holiday. Staying a month or more? That is a different trip entirely - then you are living here, not visiting, and Canggu is usually the base.

How many days each area can fill, by our own count

A simpler test than any itinerary: how many places worth a visit does each base hold? Counting only the venues in our rankings (303 entries, re-checked October 2026): Canggu 90, Ubud 83, Uluwatu 49, Seminyak 40, Sanur 27.

  • Ubud fills 3-4 days without trying. A cooking class is a half day (350-530k, lunch included), there are 13 yoga studios at 165k a class and 13 massage rooms from 240k at Karsa, and the retreats start at 3 days (6.79m at The Yoga Barn Retreats, Samyama from USD 333) and run to 7 nights (Ubud Sari 18.9m).
  • Canggu is built for staying, not visiting. 13 gyms, 13 yoga studios, 13 recovery spots and 6 coworking spaces (desks 180-299k a day) make a routine, not a sightseeing list; it rewards a week or a month more than two nights.
  • Uluwatu and Seminyak are 2-3 day stops. Uluwatu is 10 surf schools and 12 yoga studios on cliff roads (group lesson 400k at Hawaii Surf); Seminyak is 10 beach clubs and 10 restaurants (mains 90-290k++) that most people are done with in three evenings.
  • Diving is its own day each time. The boats we rank leave from the east coast and Sanur (Tulamben 2 dives 990k, Padangbai 1.4-1.45m, Nusa Penida 1.95-2.5m), 2-3 hours from the south, so every dive day is a full day.

Add it up and the 10-14 day answer is not a convention, it is arithmetic: one week split between a coast base and Ubud, plus a surf, dive or Uluwatu block.

Why distances decide this

Bali looks small on a map and drives enormous. Canggu to Uluwatu or to Ubud can be 60-90 minutes each way in traffic, and there is no fast road across the south. So the real question is not "how many days" but "how many bases" - every move costs you the better part of a day. Trips feel rushed not because Bali lacks things to do, but because people underestimate transfer time and try to see all of it.

The itineraries that work

5 days: pick one region (Canggu for work-and-social, Uluwatu for surf-and-cliffs) and go deep, one day-trip maximum. 7-10 days: a beach base plus 2-3 nights in Ubud - the split most first-timers are happiest with (Canggu or Uluwatu, is Ubud worth it). 2 weeks: add the Bukit properly, or a couple of nights on Nusa Penida or the Gilis. Longer than that and you stop planning days and start building a routine.

If you are coming to stay

A month or a season changes everything: you want a single base with real infrastructure - gyms, coworking, recovery, cafes that take laptops - and you day-trip from there. That is Canggu's whole pitch (our Canggu guides). At that length, do not over-schedule the first week; the island rewards a slow ramp. Whatever your length, build in recovery days - the heat, the scooter, and the surf add up (Canggu recovery guide).
